Brux's Milestones - 8 Years 5 Months 1 Day / Fri 7/03/2009 - How Much Is Too Much?

Your 8-Year-Old Timeline: Screen time: How much is too much?

Your 8-year-old now
We've all heard the rule that kids should watch no more than two hours a day of television. In some households, that's no problem – because many kids would rather play video games than watch TV anyway.
But the two-hours-a-day rule refers to more than TV – it includes all kinds of screen time. "Screens" include computers, handheld computer games, and game systems. It also refers to DVDs. Two hours a day means total for all of these. When a child bounces from one screen to another, the time can add up before you know it.
The biggest benefit to capping total screen time now is that your child is young enough to internalize the habit.
Don't keep a computer, TV, or game system in your child's bedroom. And turn off all electronics well in advance
of bedtime to help your child wind down.

Your life now
It's sometimes said that parents should never fight in front of their children. This is true when it comes to big issues like discipline and finances. But seeing parents quibble over small differences – and, more important, resolve them amicably – teaches kids valuable lessons. They learn that love and conflict can coexist. They see that it's important to speak up about your opinions when you feel strongly about them, but also important to listen with an open mind to the other person's perspective.
