Many experts believe that kids become spoiled when things come too easily, encouraging them to take those things for granted. Here are some ways to avoid this:
• Let your child make the case for a privilege or new possession. This helps him understand the idea of earning through chores, effort, and good behavior, instead of getting things "just because."
• Set up a reward system for good behavior and let him earn something like a bicycle bit by bit.
• Be careful not to feed a habit for the newest thing in a series. If your child has ten stuffed animals, don't automatically purchase an eleventh because it completes a set. It will be his favorite only until number 12 comes along.
• If you haven't already started giving him an allowance – a small weekly or monthly amount of money that is your child's to spend as he pleases – consider doing it. It's a great way for him to learn how much things cost, how to budget, and the benefits of saving.
Your life now
When your child is engaged in a creative endeavor – whether it's painting, building with blocks, or scribbling with sidewalk chalk – try to celebrate the process instead of worrying about the resulting mess.
Nothing stifles the creative impulse faster than being hectored every five minutes to tidy up.
While you're at it, refrain from making critical comments about the work in progress.
It's your child's vision; there's no "right" or "wrong" even if the lines are crooked or the colors unusual.
