How to use “cool” and “cold”

 

Understanding cool and cold:

 

Cold is the opposite of hot.  Cold means that your body can feel the low temperature.

 

For example:

 

It is cold in Chiang Mai.

 

Your juice is cold.

 

Are you cold?

 

Is it cold today?

 

 

Cool is the opposite of warm.  Cool means that it is a little bit cold, the same way that warm means it is a little bit hot.

 

For example:

 

It is cool inside the shopping mall.

 

The weather on the island is cool.

 

There is a cool breeze today.

 

 

You can understand temperatures like this:

 

hot – warm – normal – cool – cold

 

 

BUT…..”cool” is most often used as a slang word.  People often do not use cool to talk about temperature. 

 

“Cool” means very impressive, trendy, or interesting.

 

For example:

 

Batman was a very cool movie.

 

Peter is a very cool teacher. : )

 

Solo is a very cool boy.  : )

 

Bangkok is a cool city.

 

I like that song.  It’s cool.

 

I like your shirt.  It’s cool.
