God Forbid เป็นคำพูด ในเชิง พลีส(กรุณา) อย่าให้มันเกิดขึ้นเลย พระเจ้า ( cannot) เกิดขึ้นไม่ได้...
เช่น สมมติว่า เราอ่านข่าวในหนังสือพิมพ์ มีคนลักพาตัวเด็กน้อย...พอเราคิดถึงลูกเรา ก็จะพูดว่า God Forbid ถ้ามีคนลักพาลูกเรา....ความหมายคือ อย่าเลยพระเจ้า อย่าให้มีคนลักพาลูกเราไปเลย พระเจ้าอย่าทำ เป็นต้นค่ะ ^^

May I add to this discussion. I am currently at work, therefore I can't tpye in Thai. Please, forgive any of my improper English.

I would like to add about cultural differences. In every societies, there are differences in languages, and behaviors. People may speak slightly differently and may act differently. Things that might mean one thing to you might not mean the same thing to others.

For example, If I say the word "stupid" in English to Thais, we might not take it too seriously. We use it as "you are silly". However, to american, the word "stupid" is strong. In fact, we don't even use the word stupid in our household.

The next example, the way you act, I've seen Thais lift two fingers as a "V" and put it in between the mouth. I'm not sure what does that mean exactly in Thai. However, to american, it's inappropriate to have or to do that gesture. It means you are a vagina licker. Surprise?????

So keep in mind and be open-minded before you say anything. In this case, I've never heard of "God forbid, touch the wood" I have to thank Nui and P'Obb about sharing their knowledge. I've only heard the saying of "knock on wood." I assume that they mean the same thing. Today I also learned that you can knock on your head if you can't find wood. WOW thanks to P'Obb's friend for that info. And this would be a good example of cultural differences. Nui's husband and P'Obb friend come from the same country maybe different regions, however, they have different meaning toward the word. Does it mean that "knocking on the head when you can't find the wood around" is incorrect? I would say no. It is just because you are unfamiliar with it does not mean that it is wrong.

Lastly, I would love to add one more thing. For people who love to interject (Au-tan), the work such as "jesus christ", "Oh my God", "God forbid", If you are not Christian in any forms, I wouldn't recommend you to use any word that relate to God or Jesus. The reason is if you don't believe in Jesus or God, why would you say it or interject about them? To some Christian, it might be insulting.

สมัยทำงานมีเพื่อนคนนึงชอบอุทานว่า Jesus christ มากๆ
วันนึงขณะกำลังทำงาน ชีก็อุทานขึ้นมาต่อหน้าผู้โดยสาร..ผู้โดยสารเป็นหญิงชรา "ค้อน" เพื่อนวงใหญ่
