การเลือกใช้ should , had better , suppose

ทั้งสามคำนี้เราเลือกใช้ต่างกันในกรณีแบบไหนบ้างคะแม่แอมเลือกใช้ไม่ถูกคะ โดยเฉพาะคำว่า supposeนะคะ

should = ควรจะ  คือเป็นการพูดเรื่องที่ควรจะโดยทั่วไปค่ะ เช่น you should go back home คือเธอควรจะกลับบ้านนะ

 

had better = น่าจะ......ดีกว่า คือเป็นการพูดว่าถ้าทำอย่างนั้นจะดีกว่า เช่น you had better go back home instead of go to the cinema คือเธอควรจะกลับบ้านแทนที่จะไปดูหนังนะ

 

(to be) suppose (to) = ควรที่จะต้อง ประมาณว่ามีความจำเป็นที่จะต้องทำมากว่า should ค่ะ เช่น you are supposed to go back home คือเธอควรจะ(จำเป็นต้อง)กลับบ้านนะ

Had better

We use “had better” plus the infinitive without “to”  to give advice. Although “had” is the past form of “have”, we use “had better” to give advice about the present or future.

• You'd better tell her everything.
• I'd better get back to work.
• We'd better meet early.

The negative form is “had better not”.

• You'd better not say anything.
• I'd better not come.
• We'd better not miss the start of his presentation.

We use “had better” to give advice about specific situations, not general ones. If you want to talk about general situations, you must use “should”.

• You should brush your teeth before you go to bed.
• I shouldn't listen to negative people.
• He should dress more appropriately for the office.

When we give advice about specific situations, it is also possible to use “should”.

• You shouldn't say anything.

ตามความเข้าใจผม  เอาแค่ 2 คำก่อน  should , had better

should  -->  ควร (จะทำไม่ทำก็ได้  ไม่มีผลอะไร)

had better --> ควร (เหมือนกันแต่เป็น ควรจะ เพราะถ้าไม่ทำจะมีผลอื่น ๆ ตามมา หรืออีกนัยคือ ต้องทำนั่นเอง)

 

การใช้ Had Better (แปลว่า ควร)

รูปแบบ Had better + V1 ย่อเป็น (‘d better + V1)

ใช้เมื่อต้องการให้คำแนะนำเกี่ยวกับเรื่องปัจจุบัน หรือ อนาคต (ถึงแม้ว่า Had จะมีรูปเป็น อดีต ของ Have ก็ตาม) เช่น

• You had better go. (คุณควรไปได้แล้ว)
• You’d better hurry. (คุณควรจะรีบหน่อย)
• You’d better tell him everything. (คุณควรบอกเขาทั้งหมด)
• I’d better get back to work. (คุณควรกลับไปทำงานได้แล้ว)

 

รูปปฎิเสธ คือ Had better not + V1

• You’d better not say anything. (คุณไม่ควรจะพูดอะไรเลย)
• I’d better not come. (ฉันไม่ควรมาเลย)
• We’d better not miss the beginning of the movie. (เราไม่ควรพลาดช่วงแรกของหนัง)

 

ใช้เมื่อต้องการแนะนำ ว่าถ้าไม่ทำตาม บางสิ่งบางอย่างไม่ดีจะเกิดขึ้น เช่น

• You’d better do what I say or else you will get into trouble. (ถ้าไม่ทำตามที่ฉันบอก คุณจะมีปัญหา)
• I’d better get back to work or my boss will be angry with me. (ฉันควรจะกลับไปทำงาน มิฉะนั้น หัวหน้าจะโกรธฉัน)

 

ใช้เมื่อต้องการ พูดเชิงคำสั่ง

• You’d better help me. If you don’t, there will be trouble. (คุณควรจะช่วยฉันนะ ถ้าไม่ คุณจะมีปัญหา)

 

Had better จะบ่งบอกความรีบร้อนมากกว่า Should หรือ Ought

• You’d better do it. จะรีบร้อนมากกว่า You should do it.

เพิ่มเติม

 

การใช้ be supposed to (ต้องใส่ verb to be ด้วยนะ)

Be supposed to แปลว่า สมควรที่จะต้อง มีความหมายในเชิง ‘จำเป็นต้องทำ’

Be แทนด้วย is am are was were หรือ been

 

เช่น
you are supposed to go. แปลว่า คุณสมควรที่จะต้องไป
I am supposed to be there .แปลว่า ฉันสมควรที่จะต้องอยู่ที่นั่น
She’s supposed to call me. แปลว่า เธอสมควรที่จะต้องโทรหาฉัน
They are supposed to give us the answer today. แปลว่า พวกเขาสมควรที่จะต้องให้คำตอบเราวันนี้

 

You are supposed to go มีความจำเป็นที่จะต้องไปมากกว่า you should go ที่แปลว่า คุณควรไป
คล้ายๆ กับ has to หรือ have to หรือ must ที่แปลว่า คุณต้องไป แต่ การใช้ must จะเป็นเชิงบังคับมากกว่า
