The unreal (or hypothetical) tenses have the form of the past simple or the past perfect but they refer to present or past time, respectively. They are used in subordinate clauses which hypothesise an imaginary present or an impossible past situation.
* I wish you were here. (an imaginary present situation, because you are not here)
* If I had gone to bed earlier, I wouldn’t have overslept. (an impossible past situation, because I didn’t go to bed earlier)
The verb to wish is followed by an 'unreal' past tense when we want to talk about situations in the present that we are not happy about but cannot change:
* I wish I had more money (=but I haven't)
* She wishes she was beautiful (= but she's not)
* We wish we could come to your party (but we can't)
