Game English ( + Dialogue)

This topic is a request from K. Kwan in the Surat club. It is an excellent idea and I hope it will be helpful.

These are sentences you can use when playing games with your children:

- Do you want to play (name of game)?

- Do you know how to play?

- Roll the dice. How many is that?

- Pick a card. Don't let me see it.

- It's your turn.

- It's my turn.

- Wait for your turn, please.

- You can't look at my cards! That's cheating.

- You can't roll again. That's cheating.

- You can't change the game. That's cheating.

- We can't play if you won't follow the rules.

- No peeking! (peeking means to try and see just a little bit of something)

- How many points do you have?

- Who is the winner?

- You won! Good job!

- Mommy won! Maybe you will win next time.

- Do you want to play again?

This is a conversation (dialogue) about the game Memory:

Mommy: Do you want to play Memory?

Child: What's that?

Mommy: It's a game where you try and remember the different cards.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Very good. Let's set up our game. Here are the cards.

Child: I want the cards.

Mommy: Please wait. We are going to play a game with them.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: I am going to put the cards face down, like this. You can't see what the card is unless you turn it over.

Child: Ohhhh.

Mommy: You can turn over one card and look at the picture. Then you have to pick another card to turn over. If the pictures on both cards are the same you can keep them. Do you understand?

Child: Yes.

Mommy: Are you ready to play?

Child: Yes.

Mommy: Very good. Would you like to go first?

Child: Yes.

Mommy: Pick one card and turn it over. Good, what is that?

Child: Monkey.

Mommy: It's a monkey.

Child: Monkey.

Mommy: It's a monkey.

Child: It's a monkey.

Mommy: Very good. Now you can pick one more card to turn over. What's that?

Child: It's a snake.

Mommy: A snake and a monkey are not the same. Now you have to turn the snake and monkey over again.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Now it's Mommy's turn. I want to turn over this card. What's this?

Child: It's a snake.

Mommy: Yes, it's a snake. Hmmm, can I remember where the other snake was? Was it here? Yes! I have two snakes. Now I can keep them.

Child: My turn!

Mommy: Yes, it's your turn.

Child: I want this card.

Mommy: Okay, turn it over. What is it?

Child: It's an elephant.

Mommy: Very good. Now you can turn over one more card. Stop! I said one more card. You have turned over three. You can't do that.

Child: I want the elephant.

Mommy: I understand that. But you must follow the rules of the game or we can't play. You can only turn over one card, okay?

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Let's turn over these three cards. Now try again. Turn over one card.

Child: This one. Yeah!!

Mommy: It's an elephant. Good job. Now you can keep the elephants.
