Study Shows Infants In Bilingual Homes Keep Language Learning Ability Longer Compared To Monolingual Homes

DALLAS—
Countless studies proved the benefits of raising your children in a bilingual household, but new information showed the benefits begin as early as the first year of life.

This study looked at brain waves in infants and their responses to sounds specific to Spanish, English and sounds that could be found in both languages. It showed babies that grew up in bilingual homes kept their language learning ability for a longer period of time.

Dallas resident Alba Guillen made it a point to speak English and Spanish in her home to her four children.

"I know a lot of people my age that their parents were Spanish or Hispanic and they looked down upon the Spanish language as if that was bad, and I've always seen it as something beautiful for them to know about,” said Guillen.

The conversation with her older children flawlessly transitioned from Spanish to English and back to Spanish again while CW 33 News was there. But it turned out her use of both languages when she spoke to her 4-month-old daughter could have some of the greatest benefits.

"Unconsciously, I just sing the Itsy Bitsy Spider in English and Spanish, and you know, I think that something has to stick to her. She has to pick something up eventually off of that,” Guillen told CW 33 News.

A new study by the University of Washington and published in the Journal of Phonetics looked at the brain waves of infants from monolingual and bilingual homes to see the differences in how they responded to sounds from Spanish, English and both languages.

"Bilingual kids seem to have a long window where they're still paying attention to sounds from both languages,” said Dr. Raul Rojas with the UT Dallas Callier Center for Communication Disorders.

Rojas, who researched language growth in children from bilingual homes, said the study was more evidence that being raised in a bilingual home was a good thing.

"If you have a parent or a family member and you have people that can speak multiple languages in the home, by all means, go ahead and it would be great to do it,” he said.

That's something Guillen planned on continuing to do for her children’s future.

"There's going to be a point in their lives where Spanish is going to be a requirement for any type of job, being that there is a lot of people everywhere that speak Spanish that they have to learn it,” said Guillen.

Rojas said if you don't know a second language, don't try and suddenly use it in your home. He said you have to have the fundamentals and be a good model to your children for them to properly pick it up.
