Playing With Beads
Mommy: What would you like to do today?
Child: Make beads.
Mommy: Do you want to make things with beads?
Mommy: That’s a great idea. Let’s play with the beads.
Mommy: Do you remember the rules for playing with beads?
Mommy: Can you tell me what they are?
Child: No eat bead.
Mommy: That’s right. You can’t eat any of the beads. You can’t put any of them in your mouth. Okay?
Mommy: Do you remember the second rule?
Child: Yes. No throw beads.
Mommy: That’s right. We don’t throw the beads. The beads are for making things, not throwing. Okay?
Mommy: Great! Now we can play with the beads. What would you like to make first?
Mommy: A picture? Do you want to make a picture?
Mommy: Can you say, “I want to make a picture”?
Child: I want to make a picture.
Mommy: Very good. What colors would you like to use in your picture?
Child: Green and blue.
Mommy: Good choices. What are you going to make?
Child: A fish.
Mommy: Very good. Whoa! Stop, please! Remember the first rule? We don’t put the beads in our mouth. Spit them out, please.
Mommy: It’s not funny. If you don’t spit out the beads right now then we can’t play anymore. Mommy will have to take away all the beads. Do you want to stop playing?
Mommy: Thank you. Now we can continue playing. Do you want to make a fish with the beads?
Mommy: You don’t? You changed your mind? What would you like to make instead?
Mommy: You want to make a necklace? Great idea! What colors do you want to use?
Mommy: Only orange? Okay. Let’s make an orange necklace.
Mommy: Here is the string. Can you put one bead on the string?
Mommy: Let me help you. See the hole in the bead? See the tip of the string? The string will fit through the hole in the bead. Can you do it?
Mommy: Good job! Here’s the next bead. Keep putting the beads on the string until you have enough.
Child: Okay. Finished.
Mommy: That’s a wonderful necklace. Do you want me to help you tie it around your neck.
Child: No. Mommy.
Mommy: It’s a necklace for Mommy? Thank you so much. Let me tie it around my neck. Wow! It’s beautiful. Let’s clean up the beads.
