Going to the Temple

This is a dialogue request from a parent.  Since I am not Buddhist, I had to ask my wife about going to the temple.  This dialogue is not for a ceremony at a temple.  It is only for making merit by going to the temple and making an offering.  As always, if I have made any mistakes about Buddhism they are not intentional.    

 

Going to the Temple

 

Mommy: Today we are going to the temple to make merit.

Child: What?

Mommy: What is making merit?

Child: Yes.

Mommy: Making merit means doing something good for someone else.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Today we will visit the temple and give some food to the monks.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Do you want to talk about the temple?

Child: Yes.

Mommy: The temple is a special place.  It is the place where the monks live.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: The temple is a quiet place.  You cannot scream or yell in the temple.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: We will go and see one of the monks and offer him some food.  Then the monk will bless us, okay?

Child: Okay.

Mommy: When the monk is blessing us you have to bow your head like this.

Child: Like this?

Mommy: Very good.  And put your hands together like this.

Child: This?

Mommy: Yes.  You bow your head, put your hands together and listen to the monk.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Listening means not talking, okay?

Child: Yes.

Mommy: Let’s go to the temple.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Here’s the temple.  Do you like it?

Child: Yes.  Colors.

Mommy: Yes, the temple is very colorful.  It’s beautiful.  Do you see a monk?

Child: Yes.  There.

Mommy: Let’s go offer the monk this food.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Put the food down in front of the monk on this piece of fabric.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Now bow your head and put your hands together, like we practiced at home.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Now we listen to the monk.  He will bless us.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: The monk is finished.  Please say “thank you” to the monk.

Child: Thank you.

Mommy: Now we can go home.  How do you feel?

Child: Good.

Mommy: Me too.  Making merit is a nice activity.

Child: Yes.

Mommy: If you like it, we can come back again next week.

Child: Okay.
