Folding Paper (Origami) Dialogue

Like art, I know nothing about origami.  But a parent asked me for a dialogue and this is the best I could do.  It is difficult to write about something like origami because it is something that you need to see to do.  Describing it with words is almost impossible.  Still, I hope this dialogue helps.

 

Folding Paper (Origami) Dialogue

 

Mommy: Do you want to do origami today?

Child: What’s that?

Mommy: Origami is folding paper into shapes.  It’s fun.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Great!  What animal would you like to make?  A dog or a duck?

Child: A dog.

Mommy: Okay.  Let’s make a dog.  First we take our paper and fold it here. Can you do that?

Child: Yes.

Mommy: Let me help you.  Very good.

Child: Thank you.

Mommy: Then we fold our paper again like this.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Try to match up the corners of the paper.  Then it is easier to fold.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Now we take this corner of the paper and fold it like this.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Then we lift up here and slide in this section of the paper.  Like this.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: And now we have a dog.

Child: Yeah! 

Mommy: What does a dog say?

Child: Woof woof.

Mommy: That’s right.  Do you like origami?

Child: Yes.

Mommy: Do you want to make another shape?

Child: Yes.

Mommy: What do you want to make next?

Child: A dragon.

Mommy: A dragon?  I’m not sure I know how to make a dragon.  How about a duck instead?

Child: Okay.

Mommy: First, we fold our paper here.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Then we fold it again.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Then we fold it like this.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: And like this.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Then we bend the paper like this.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: Uh oh.  Your duck looks strange.  I think we forgot something.

Child: Uh oh.

Mommy: Let’s unfold this section of the paper and try again.

Child: Okay.

Mommy: There we are.  That looks better.

Child: Yes.

Mommy: Then we lift this part here and we have a duck!

Child: Yeah!

Mommy: Origami is fun!

Child: Yes.
