Leeches are often used today in plastic or reconstructive surgery ,especially where a part of the body , such as a finger , hand , toe,  or ear has become severed and has to be re-attached. This is how it works: sometimes a patient’s veins are unable to take blood away from the body part and so the blood builds up ,causing ‘venous congestion’ When this happens, the re-attached part of the body turns blue and lifeless , and is at risk of being lost. Leeches attached to the body will suck  the blood away ,allowing the re-attached body part to survive until the veins being to work normally.

ทุกวันนี้ ปลิงได้ถูกนำมาใช้ในการผ่าตัดและศัลยกรรมตกแต่ง โดยเฉพาะเมื่อบางส่วนของร่างกาย เช่น นิ้วมือ มือ นิ้วเท้า หรือ หู ขาด และ ต้องได้รับการต่อกลับไปใหม่ หลักการทำงานคือ บางครั้งเมื่อหลอดเลือดดำของผู้ป่วยไม่สามารถกำจัดเลือดเสียออกจากร่างกายได้ ทำให้เกิดการอุดตันของหลอดเลือด ซึ่งส่งผลให้ส่วนของอวัยวะที่เราต่อกลับไปเปลี่ยนเป็นสีเขียวและตาย การนำปลิงมาดูดเลือดออกจากบริเวณนั้น ทำให้ส่วนของอวัยวะที่ต่อกลับไปนั้นมีชีวิตและทำให้เส้นเลือดกลับมาทำงานได้เป็นปกติ
