DeeDee Project (Another successful project following Karnsinee Project.)
Dear members,
I am here to introduce another successful project "DeeDee Project". It was about a year ago when I first met Khun Maneerat in Premier Lounge at Central Bangna. She was interested in my daughter. After a few minutes talk with
me she decided to follow me without any doubt. She said she intended to send her son "DeeDee" to international school
like his cousins. but now she had completely changed her mind. Why international school ? Why pay more ?
" If Arkawat can do it, Maneerat can do it too." She said. And that was when "DeeDee Project" started.
As a matter of fact DeeDee can not talk at the moment but he can understand 4 languages ; Thai, English,
Tae-Chew and Mandarin without any difficulty. I hope I can make some audio files of DeeDee's conversation in
4 languages and put them in the web very soon.

Here is the story.

- ตอน 1 ขวบ เริ่ม bed-time stories

Pull your shirt up"
พูดภาษานั้น คน ๆ เดียว น่าจะสอนหลายภาษาได้ เพียงแต่ต้องเป็น one at a time

This is a spoon We use the spoon to take food
from the bowl (หยิบด้วยข้าวให้ดู) into our mouth (ทำท่าตักกินให้ดู) This is a rice cooker. We cook rice in
the pot.
This is a closet . This is a bed.

Karnsinee Project
I have some experience to tell you. It might be useful to other parents. I have done a project about
teaching English to my daughter. My daughter's name is Karnsinee so I called my project "Karnsinee Project". I have been >dreaming about doing a project like this about 15 years ago when I first read a book entitled "รอถืงอนุบาลก็สายเสียแล้ว".
The writer talked about the potential of young kids. It is believed that the younger the kids are the
better they will be able to learn. So I started my project at the fifth month of my wife pregnancy. I talked to my daughter in her mom's tummy with my home-made special tool made of 2 funnels and a plastic hose. I called her "Jane" since I knew that she is a girl. I myself used to speak Chinese at home when I was young because everybody at home spoke Chinese. So I use this idea to apply to my daughter in the same way except that I speak English instead. The other thing is her mom is from Had Yai. She can speak Thai in 2 different ways, one without accent like mine and the other with accent
as well as the southerners do because she speaks southern accent at home and speaks central accent at school.(People in Had Yai's downtown don't normally speak Thai with accent except people moved in from other provinces.) My father-in-law and mother-in-law both speak Thai with accent all the time. This makes my wife talk to her parents and her sisters with accent all the time too, no matter where or when. So I also took this into account too.

I believe that If I speak English to my daughter at all time she will get used to it and will speak to me in English. And now, I can prove this belief. At present she speaks to me in English only. She has been going to Thai school since last year. She is now in K1. She is 3 3/4 years old. Before she went to school she sometimes spoke to me in Thai because she could not differentiate the language. I talk to my wife in Thai, so my daughter learns Thai from our conversation. When she wants to take part in our conversation she speaks English even though the conversation is carried out in Thai. My daughter knows Thai in this way and never shows any difficulty in Thai communication at school. At first my wife
sometimes speaks Thai sometimes speaks English. But now she has learnt a lot more general
conversation along with our daughter. Now she is capable of speaking all the everyday life English
and stops speaking Thai to our daughter. We can see that our daughter never speak Thai at home
anymore only when my wife starts up the conversation in Thai. It seems to me that she has 2 modes of languages in her head. This is another interesting thing. Since she has English as her first language ( I believe so) she thinks in English all the time. She always talks in her sleep in English. Whenever she wants to tell me anything about what happened or what the teacher said at school she retrieves the information from her memory in English. So I believe that she memorises all the information in her head in English and she take it out without any translation. But on the other hand I notice that when she speaks Thai she has a bit delay doing some translation in her head. Her Thai has not yet improved to the same level as her English ( She started speaking Thai at 2). This is a little bit drawback but we don't mind this too much. We believe that she will catch up with her friends very soon. We let her learn Thai at school and English at home. All the TV programs except ' Nation News ' are in English. And all the tapes for kids are in English. In summary my principle about this is " KEEP TALKING and
DO BELIEVE in POTENTIAL of YOUNG KIDS ".

I hope this is not a waste of your time and I believe it will be helpful to other dedicated parents.

Woderful experience, Arkawat !
Thanks.

What Khun Arkawat has written is very interesting.
This kind of experience has been disclosed by Dr. Sippanon, Ph.D. (Nuclear physics), a former minister of education.
He has talked to and educated his daughter during the period of his wife's pregnancy similar to what Khun Arkawat has done.
Moreover, Dr. Art-ong, Ph.D (Nuclear physics), a former NASA scientist, has also mentioned something about the influence of music on plant growth.
Very informative and fruitful to all !

ข้อความ : really superb what you have done. To talk in Enlish all the time while all environments are in Thai style is a real hard work especially within Thai societies.
Congratulate on achieving "Karnsinee Project ". You've proven this idea by yourself and an achievement in return is yours.

Spud - 30/05/2002 09:10

Many thanks to all of you for your interest and comments. Sorry for the grammatical mistakes.

My daughter is now 4 3/4 years old. She has been
to Thai school for 2 years. She can speak Thai as
well as any kid at same age. And still she talks
English at home all the time. She watches cartoon
on Cartoon Network every day. Thanks to UBC
for supplying the cheap Cable Network, otherwise
I will never be successful in this project. Now she has gone beyond my English ability. So I leave it
almost all to UBC to educate my kid.

By the way my second daughter is now 5 months
old. I am looking forward to see another successful
project "Sineekarn Project" within the next 12 months. My second project seems to be much
easier because my first daughter is very helpful
in teaching the new baby how to talk (English).

Please don't worry much about the grammatical points, Khun Arkawat.
Everything is OK, for we can understand all what you have written. You have successfully put the meaning across.
Paying too much attention to grammar can retard your creativity as well as writing ability.
So, don't worry, please.
So far so good, krub !

Dear Ajarn Pichai

I sent you a tape about my conversation with my
daughter to you a few day ago. (about 20 minutes.)
Please tell me whether I can claim my 'Karnsinee
Project' a successful project.
In fact, It is not a miracle. It can possibly be done.
I takes effort to do so, but not too much.
The very important thing is we have to start it at the
very beginning of the childhood.

I really hope to see other dedicated parents to be
successful in this kind of project without sending
the kid to inter-school or abroad.

จาก : Arkawat - 07/06/2002 15:26

ข้อความ : I'm quite sure you're really successful with your project. However, please come tell when you know what the exact result is. You put us a very good example. If I have a chance to have a baby, I'll do the same way to him/her. I really hope Thai families will teach their kids English by this way. Not every single family, but I think many families especially those who live in the city can do this in the exact way or in a similar way.

Many thanks for the tape, Khun Arkawat.
You have done a good job.
Congratulations!
While listening to the tape, it seemed to me that I was somewhere overseas listening to a little kid whose mother tongue is English.
"... it's not a toy dog. It's a real dog. ... ", she said these very accurately and fluently.
All of my colleagues have confirmed that she is not a Thai kid for sure, because what your little cute daughter said is exactly the same as what native speakers of English do.
If I can evaluate her English proficiency, I would like to say that she has reached the level of "native like" which only few foreigners can do.
Linguistically, a language model is an important factor in learning a second or a foreign language or even a mother tongue.
You have played this great role very successfully, for your spoken English is very strong.
So, it is no doubt to say that your daughter has picked up so many features of the language from you.
It is your great success, Khun Arkawat.
Congratulations !
p
PS. I was wondering if I could tell some of my friends who are researchers and academics working in both local and international universities about your project, Khun Arkawat.

Dear Khun Spud
I believe that you can do it. I can gaurantee your success. My English is not better than yours.
I can tell from your post. Believe me, it is worth doing such a project.
*------------------------
Dear Ajarn Pichai
Thank you very much for your time and your compliment. As far as I am concerned, my kid's
English is not that good at the moment. But I believe in her potential to go to that point in the
near future. I am willing to reveal my project to anyone who is interested. May I repeat again that it is not very hard to do if you start it from the very beginning of the childhood.

*-----------------------------------------
Dear Mat
Thanks a lot for your interest.
I get these details from my note.

9 months old :
She could put hand up when I said "Put up your hand."

9 1/2 months:
She could stick her tounge out when I said "Stick out your toung"

1 year 5 months:
She could say "Papa sit"

1 year 7months:
Her mom quitted job to look after her.
She started watching ' Teletubbies' from the UBC. and some Disney's Cartoon

1 year 9 months:
When I asked "What does a dog say ?"
She said " Hong!, hong!"
and also cat, frog, bird, goat, sheep, horse, cow and monkey.

1year 10months:
When I showed her the animal card and said 'What is this ?' She would say 'Cat, Dog...etc' about 20 cards.

In the zoo, I said 'Hippo eats grass'. She said 'Jane eat

1year 11months:
She said: 'Jane go swimming' (She wanted to swim) I said : 'No, it's gonna rain.' Then she said: 'Jane use umbrella'.

2years:
She could sing some part of 'Twinkle twinkle little star'

2years 2months:
She could sing 'Twinkle twinkle little star' to the end. She could count from 1 up to 10.

Since then, she has been watching more than 1000 hours of Cartoon. And still keep doing so.
Apart from this, I have been reading some bedtime stories to her everynight for more than a
year. Maybe we missed only 4-5 nights.

I hope these information will be useful for anyone who interested in such project.

Best wishes to you all,

ข้อความ : I get to know this topic from Plan Web-board. It is very interesting. I am also trying to speak English to my son (10 months old). I would like to seek your advise. We are thinking about sending him to International school but also afraid that he would not know Thai. If we continue speak to him in English (although our accent is not good), and encourage him to see or listen to English movie, song, will this help him to be able to speak English like native without going to International school.
Appreciate your advice.

More information to you.
He could understand me saying "Let's go", he will raise him both arms to me to carry him.
He could understand me saying "Where is Maple (It is magnet), give it to mommy". He will catch maple magnet and show me but don't really give me.

Mae_lookmoo - - mae_lookmoo@hotmail.com - 17/06/2002 22:45

Khun Mae_lookmoo,
Congratulations! You are on the right track. Don't worry too much about the accent. I can say that my accent is quite all right when compare with Thai students in general. But you can still tell it right away that I'm Thai when you here my accent.
My wife's accent is monotonous, like most Thai students. And she has most influence for my kid to follow. Anyway I have been giving my kid plenty of English inputs that she picks up a lot from the media.
I myself used lullaby songs, 'Wee Sing" at about one year old. You can buy it from B2S, I have suggested one of the executives of B2S about this project and she orders it for the shop.

After that I used Disney's movies like 'Pooh' etc.
Then 'Teletubbies' , 'Clifford', 'Caillou', 'Sesami St'
from UBC. And a lot of bedtime stories, most of them are Disney's (the same stories as seen on TV). If possible please watch TV together with the kid. At present, 'Clifford' & 'Caillou' is on Channel 23
at 4 pm weekday, and 11 am on weekends, just after 'Sesami St'. I would like to suggest that you make copy of them for further use. 'Clifford' & 'Caillou' are very good for learning 'everyday life' conversation and also all the EQ aspects.
I have learnt a lot from these 2 programs, and still learn more every time I watch them.

I can guarantee your success, keep going.
Please keep in touch, let us be informed when you see any progress.
Looking forward to seeing your success very soon.
Best wishes.

More information
At present, my wife speaks Thai most of the time and my kid always reponse in English. This way we can strengthen her Thai without destroying her English. My wife decided to switch back to English when my second daughter starts to talk perhaps a year later.

จาก : Arkawat - 21/06/2002 12:35

ข้อความ : Just saw your info. But my kid is 2 yrs and 10 mnths already. Is it too late? Now my kid can sing Twinkle little star, etc. But when I talk to her in English she will say.. Khun Mae Pood THAI si ka. When I read story book in English, she will say, tell in Thai si ka. What should I do? Can you mail to me at gate_n@yahoo.com too.

Mae nong ninja - - gate_n@yahoo.com - 10/07/2002 08:04

Dear Mae Nong Ninja
I am sorry to say that it is too late to do it like my project.
You need to start your project before the kid learn how to talk.
If the kid start talking in Thai you can only make him/her speak English as a second language. Anyway it is not to late to make your kid's English very good or probably as good as her Thai. It depends on how much you put effort into it and how much English input you can put into her head.
Please carry on, do your best.
Best wishes.

ข้อความ : It's very interesting. I've just been pregnant. My husband and I have decided that we will definitely follow your steps. Problems may be that we will stay with our parents, who cannot speak English at all. However, we will try our best.

We have listened to you and your daughter's conversation. It's really amazing. Thanks to you and your family very much for letting us know this success.

Dear Khun Arkawat,

I just find your information today and interested in it very much. Now my Timmy is 2 years and 3 months. I try to talk in English with him since he had never been spoke, may be since he was 10 months. At that time he can understand 'flowers' and also can pronouce this word when he was 1 year old. After that he can say 'Go Go' when the car stop at the parking or at home, 'come on' when he needs his father or me to come.
When he was 1 year old, he watch 'teletubbies' and 'Barney' in English. Now I think he can understand almost everything in that program and also can sing along with 'Wee sing' 'a b c', moreover can count 1-10 as well.
But my problem is I stop talking with him in English for long period, may be 8 months at least.
I need your analyze and advise, what should I do next step for catch up teaching english to my son to acheive the aim like yours.
Please, Khun Arkawat, I look forward to hearing from you.

ข้อความ : Keep talking in English, try to do everyday life in English. I hope you can be successful since you have put plenty of English inputs in his head. If you haven't, it would be very hard to do such project.

By the way I have made some more audio files in my daughter's Yahoo Briefcase. Check it out. You will see how naturally my daughter can talk English.
