Snakes & Ladders Rules

Snakes and Ladders is a board game usually played by children. The Hasbro version, called Chutes and Ladders, shows children making various decisions, then the consequences of that action. Good actions allow the player to climb a ladder and get closer to the finish, while bad decisions make the player slide down a chute, which takes him farther from the finish.

  1. Players

    • Snakes and Ladders is played by two to four players, each with her own token to move around the board.

    Moving

    Ladders

    • If the space a player lands on is at the bottom of a ladder, he should climb the ladder, which brings him to a space higher on the board.

    Snakes/Chutes

    • If the space a player lands on is at the top of a snake/chute, she must slide down to the bottom of it, landing on a space closer to the beginning.

    Winning

    • The winner is the player who gets to the last space on the board first, whether by landing on it from a roll, or by reaching it with a ladder.

Instructions for Snakes & Ladders

Instructions for Snakes & Ladders thumbnail Snakes and Ladders requires a die to play.

Snakes and Ladders is a game that can teach math skills as well as be entertaining. The origin of the game appears to be a second-century Indian teaching tool to help children to learn the difference between evil and good. Another version of the game, which appeared in the United States in 1943, is played in the same manner but features chutes in place of snakes on the game board. Snakes and Ladders is a simple, easy-to-understand game of chance that can be played by people of all ages.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with the game pieces off the board, next to the number "1" space.

    • 2

Have the first player roll the die. That person then moves his game piece the number that he rolls on the die.

    • 3

Have the second player roll the die. She moves her game piece the number that she rolls on the die.

    • 4

Continue this pattern until the game is over.

    • 5

Move around the board in number order. Move from Space 1 to 2 to 3 and so on until you reach Space 100.

    • 6

Move your piece up the ladder to the space where the ladder ends, if it lands exactly on a spot with the beginning of a ladder.

    • 7

Move your piece down, to the space where the snake ends, if it lands at the beginning of a snake.

    • 8

Reach space 100 by exact roll and win the game. For example, if you're one space away from Space 100, you must roll a 1 to win.

How to Play Snakes & Ladders

The original game of Snakes and Ladders was created in ancient India and brought to Europe in 1892. The original game was inspired by religion; going up the ladders represented committing good acts which caused you to come closer to nirvana, while sliding down snakes represented sliding into evil and death. The following will show you how to play the modern game of Snakes and Ladders.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 or more players
  • Snakes and Ladders game board
  • 1 die

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain or make a Snakes and Ladders game board or find a website where you can play online. Players place their game pieces on the space on the board labeled "0" or directly in front of the "1" space to start.

    • 3

Roll the die if you are the first player and mark off the number rolled starting on the "1" spot on the board. All players take turns rolling the die and moving their markers.

    • 4

Take an extra turn if you roll a 6 on your die after moving six places on the board. You may roll up to two 6s and take two extra turns. However, if you throw three 6s in a row, you must return to the very beginning of the board and may not move again until you roll another 6 on your turn.

    • 5

Move up a ladder to a higher spot on the board if you land on a space that has the bottom of the ladder in the space after you've completed your move, which is called "climbing the ladder." Move your marker down the snake to a lower spot on the board if you land on a space on the board that has a tip of a snake on it after you've completed your move, which is called "sliding down the snake."

    • 6

Follow the directions if there is anything written on the spot that you've landed on after taking a turn. For example, if it says "go back three spaces" on the spot you land on, you must obey this command.

    • 7

Win the game by being the first to reach the "100" spot on the board.

Snakes and Ladders is an ancient Indian board game regarded today as a worldwide classic.[1] It is played between two or more players on a gameboard having numbered, gridded squares. A number of "ladders" and "snakes" are pictured on the board, each connecting two specific board squares. The object of the game is to navigate one's game piece, according to die rolls, from the start (bottom square) to the finish (top square), helped or hindered by ladders and snakes respectively. The historic version had root in morality lessons, where a player's progression up the board represented a life journey complicated by virtues (ladders) and vices (snakes).

The game is a simple race contest lacking a skill component, and is popular with young children.[2]
